Roger Federer fired 15 aces on his way to a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win over 104th-ranked Andreas Beck of Germany at the U.S. Open on Thursday. The temperature climbed into the 90s Fahrenheit (mid-30s Celsius) yet again at Flushing Meadows, and Federer showed up for his match wearing a warmup jacket. Then he put in his 1 hour, 41 minutes on court to ease into the third round.

American teen Capra pulls off Open upset (AP)
A year ago at the U.S. Open, American teenager Melanie Oudin told the world to "BELIEVE," with her sneakers and her play. Among those she motivated: Beatrice Capra, an 18-year-old from Ellicott City, Md., and a wild-card entry who is following in Oudin's footsteps at Flushing Meadows, albeit without any mottos on her shoes.

Azarenka out of doubles after collapsing (AP)
A day after Victoria Azarenka collapsed on court during a singles match at the U.S. Open, she and partner Dinara Safina pulled out of women's doubles. Azarenka and Safina originally were scheduled to face the ninth-seeded pair of Cara Black and Anastasia Rodionova in the first round of doubles Thursday.

No. 3 seed Djokovic reaches 3rd round (AP)
Novak Djokovic reached the third round at the U.S. Open with a 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory over 52nd-ranked Philipp Petzschner of Germany on Thursday. Play was delayed in the eighth game while police escorted away three fans after a fight in the upper deck in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The No. 3-seeded Djokovic has made it at least this far all six times he's played at Flushing Meadows.

6th-seeded Davydenko upset by Gasquet (AP)
Richard Gasquet has helped France improve on its strong U.S. Open showing with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 upset over sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia. Gasquet, ranked 38th, moves onto the third round. Even before Thursday's match, he was helping make history -- one of a record 12 Frenchmen to make it to the second round at Flushing Meadows.

Stylish Sharapova cruises into 3rd round (AP)
Maria Sharapova has advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open with a stress-free 6-1, 6-2 victory over Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic. The 14th-seeded Sharapova had as much trouble with the wind at Arthur Ashe Stadium as with her 68th-ranked opponent Thursday night. Sharapova is looking for her second U.S.

11th seed Cilic ousted in 5-set marathon (AP)
Qualifier Kei Nishikori of Japan has upset 11th-seeded Marin Cilic at the U.S. Open in a five-set marathon that took a minute short of five hours with temperatures in the mid-90s. Nishikori won Thursday's second-round match 5-7, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1. Two years ago, he reached the fourth round to become the first Japanese man to get that far at the U.S.
